SWITCHED IMMORTAL/VIRGIN RECORDS Dont dismiss Switched as just another angst-ridden band out of Cleveland. They may be angry, heavy and hard, but theyre also smart, melodic and more than a little clever. Their debut CD, "Subject to Change" on Immortal Records, is full of emotionally charged songs laced with strong hooks that demand you listen. From the first chord of "Inside" you step onto their musical roller coaster. Vocalist Ben Schigel, commanding an uncanny ability to jump effortlessly between singing and screaming, successfully varies his vocal styles from line to line, song to song. Emphasizing Ben's vocals are the impenetrable guitar riffs of Brad Kochmit, working double duty to also lay down each songs foundation. Rounding out Switched are the solid and talented Joe Schigal on guitar, Jason French on bass, and Chad Szeliga on drums. Together these five Cleveland musicians produce high energy, sing at the top of your lungs music. Lyrically its best described as spoken word meets abstract expressionism. Structurally it seems so full of spontaneity that each song invites the listener to mix in his or her own experiences. And just when you think you've got it figured out, each song on the aptly named "Subject To Change" turns in on itself and comes out the other side something different... something Switched. "Subject To Change" has staying power; stand up and take notice. review by kristina sisti |
