| DOG FASHION DISCO Clearwater Theater, West Dundee, IL 10.12.03 Tonight is a momentous occasion. The cause for celebration? Tonight is the night of "The Fiesta" [ed.'s note: the venue's official web site erroneously listed Dog Fashion Disco as "Dog FIESTA Disco" and it quickly became a running gag amongst DFD board members]. The lights dim. The five musicians onstage remain uncharacteristically quiet, until... The sound of a high-hat breaks the silence and, to the delight of a small but dedicated gathering of rabid fans, "Leper Friend" kicks in. DFD exudes so much energy and intensity onstage, you can't help but get caught up in it all. I myself am so enthralled I don't even stop to take notes. [note: Thanks for the setlist, Steve!] With the exception of "9 to 5 at the Morgue," "Leper Friend," and "Rat on a Sinking Ship" [a new song], DFD plows through most of their current album, Committed To A Bright Future. For those of you wondering what the new tune sounds like, it's definitely one of the faster, heavier DFD songs. It would fit in perfectly with the rest of the songs on Committed. DFD eases into the jazzy lull of "Pogo the Clown," that lull quickly jolted by "9 to 5 at the Morgue," "Castaway," and the blistering closer [in which guitarist Jasan breaks a string]; a few bars of Slayer's "Raining Blood" followed by DFD's punk-tinged masterpiece, "Albino Rhino." After the band walks offstage, some die-hards in the crowd clamor for an encore, but Jasan walks back onstage and informs us he's broken his only guitar. In the bio at their official website, Todd [vocals] explains how the band had wanted Committed's songs to translate well at the live show: "We wanted to write songs that would just pummel you in the face for 45 minutes." Mission accomplished. My ears are ringing, my throat is sore, and my neck hurts. Thank you, Dog Fashion Disco. I'll definitely be there the next time "The Fiesta" is in town.
